Little Movers Rotherham were at Silverwood Care Home this week for a Heartwarming Intergenerational Session.

Laughter, music and meaningful connections filled Silverwood Care Home this week as Little Movers hosted an intergeneration session and welcomed Little Learners Wickersley childminders into the home.

The visit brought together young children, their childminders and care home residents for a joyful morning of singing, movement, dance and shared smiles. From dancing with scarves and popping bubbles to joining in with familiar songs, the session created moments of genuine connection between the youngest and oldest members of the community.

This special visit also formed part of Little Movers Charity Week, with everyone getting involved in a sponsored dance in aid of Weston Park Cancer Charity. Children, carers and residents all danced together to raise money for the charity, making the session even more meaningful by supporting an important local cause. At the end of the session, every child & resident received a Charity Champion certificate in recognition of their fundraising efforts and community spirit.

One particularly special moment saw a remarkable 100-year-old resident enthusiastically joining in with the activities, proving that the joy of music, movement and play truly has no age limit.

The impact of the session was beautifully summed up by one resident, who smiled and said,

“This is the best part of my day.”

It was a simple but powerful reminder of just how meaningful these visits can be.

Intergenerational experiences like these offer incredible benefits for everyone involved. For children, spending time with older adults helps develop confidence, communication skills, empathy and compassion while helping them appreciate the value of community. For residents, the energy and curiosity of young children can lift spirits, encourage conversation, spark treasured memories and reduce feelings of loneliness. These shared experiences promote emotional wellbeing and create genuine moments of happiness that can have a lasting impact long after the session has ended.

The partnership between Little Movers, Silverwood Care Home and Little Learners Wickersley demonstrates how bringing generations together can enrich lives on both sides. These sessions are far more than entertainment—they create purpose, connection and unforgettable memories.

As care homes continue to prioritise resident wellbeing, intergenerational sessions are becoming an increasingly valuable addition to activities programmes. They combine music, movement, sensory play and meaningful social interaction in a way that supports emotional, physical and cognitive wellbeing while strengthening links with the local community.

Little Movers is encouraging other Rotherham care homes to consider introducing similar sessions as part of their wellbeing and entertainment budgets. Inviting local children’s activity providers into the home is a simple yet powerful way to enhance residents’ quality of life, build community partnerships and create magical moments that everyone will treasure.

“It was a privilege to be invited to deliver a Little Movers intergeneration session at Silverwood Care Home. Seeing a 100-year-old resident laughing alongside babies and toddlers was incredibly moving. To also share our Charity Week with the residents by dancing together in support of Weston Park Cancer Charity made the visit even more special. Watching generations connect so naturally reminds us that joy, kindness and community have no age limit, and we’d love to help more care homes experience the magic of intergenerational play.”
