In Memory of George McGurrell – Geordie’s Scholarship

George “Geordie” McGurrell, father of Mel, our founder, was a hardworking, well-loved, and respected roofer. Known for giving young people a chance, he opened doors for countless individuals through his work at WestLine Roofing.

On the 40th anniversary of his untimely death in a car accident while at work, we are proud to launch Geordie’s Scholarship in his memory. George loved his job and was loved by all of his colleagues—his spirit, generosity, and warmth left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

George would have been incredibly proud of Little Movers. As an active footballer and runner, he encouraged Mel to run from a young age, recognising her talent. Seeing children and families lead such a healthy, active lifestyle from an early age would have made him very happy and affirmed everything he believed about supporting young people.

Geordie’s Scholarship exists to continue George’s way of giving

George never hesitated to support young people, offering opportunities without thought or question. At times he gave people a chance who would have been overlooked by most. His legacy inspires this scholarship: to support a young person who lives every day with passion, drive, and a love for life—someone ready to make a real difference in their own life and in their community.

A Few Words from Mel:

“I was so lucky to have the most perfect Dad. Forty years ago, he died in a crash and I was meant to be in the car with him. For so long, I’ve never really known how to properly remember him a bench, a sponsorship, nothing ever felt quite right.

Now, I’m in a position where I can do what he did: give a young person a real opportunity, help them get on a good path, and set them up for a good life. This feels right, and I know he would be absolutely bursting with pride.

Everyone who knew my Dad always says I walk like him, I talk like him, I smile like him… so today, I’m going to be like him and help someone get started in life.
